My analysis comes out like this, with equal weight on the Air and the "baby Pro" models as I just don't see enough difference between them to bother
(assuming new purchases)
Intel -> Mx, yes 100%
M1 -> M3, within form factor: yes
M2 -> M3, within form factor, no unless you specifically need to use the 2nd monitor
Anything -> M2 Air, yes, if desperate for that extra $100 price break which can be significant, and if you're ready to upgrade/switch/replace anyway.
There's a strong case to be made for buying an Apple refurb M2 unless, again, you really need that 2nd monitor support like right now. The M2 will be getting a firmware push to enable that, presumably.
